In the 1950s Mr. August’s brother, Charles, opened a Midas International Corp. muffler shop in downtown Rochester. Following a more than three decade career in Rochester’s clothing industry, Mr. August joined his brother in business when the two, with Sheldon Lane, turned the Midas shops into Monro Muffler in the late 1960s.

Mr. August retired from his role as senior vice president of Monro Muffler in the early 1980s when the organization had roughly 20 stores. Monro Muffler now has more than 1,000 locations in 25 states. Mr. August was a major supporter of Rochester-area organizations including Boy Scouts, United Way of Greater Rochester, Hillside Family of Agencies, Al Sigl Community of Agencies, the Mary Cariola Center, the Strong, Unity Health System/Park Ridge Hospital and Rochester Institute of Technology, among others.
